The series is localized as Frieren: Beyond Journey's End. It is a high fantasy adventure manga written by Yamada Kanehito and illustrated by Abe Tsukasa. It was released in Weekly Shounen Sunday and began on April 28, 2020. It was adapted into an anime TV series by Madhouse. The anime was directed by Saitou Keiichirou who previously directed one of the biggest anime hits of 2022, Bocchi the Rock, and thanks to this series' success, also directed one of the biggest anime hits of 2023. It was written by Suzuki Tomohiro. The orchestral score was composed by Evan Call. The first season ran from September 29, 2023 to March 22, 2024. It had an unusual episode count of 28 episodes, but the series ran on a 24 episode weekly schedule as the first four episodes premiered on the same day. The second season premiered on January 16, 2026. It was directed by Kitagawa Tomoya, who had worked as an episode director on the first season, with original director Saitou stepping down to assistant director due to being too exhausted to oversee the second season like he did the first. Writer Yamada had previously written and drew a comedy manga titled Bocchi_Hakase_to_Robot_Shoujo_no_Zetsubou_Teki_Utopia, which didn't sell well even though editor Ogura Katsuma loved it. For Yamada's next project, Ogura suggested that they hire someone else to illustrate the story while Yamada focused on writing. After settling on Abe as the illustrator, the two of them began creating a one-shot for Frieren. The series was initially planned to be a comedy like Yamada's previous work, but when the one shot was finished, Ogura realized that the story was no longer a comedy, and subsequently, the main story became a dramatic high fantasy story with some moments of levity. The series follows Frieren, a nigh-immortal elf mage, who has lived for over a thousand years. She has just come back from saving the world from the demon king with her party of adventurers, Himmel, the leader and face of the group, Eisen, a dwarf warrior, and Heiter, an alcoholic priest. The party rest to enjoy the festivities and a special meteor shower that occurs every fifty years before going their separate ways with the promise that they will reunite to see the next shower. Fifty years pass by in a flash for Frieren, who thanks to her longevity perceives time at a different rate than humans do, and she keeps her promise to reunite with her party, only to be caught off guard as she sees firsthand just how much the human members of her party have aged, especially Himmel. The party have one last adventure together to see the meteor shower and Himmel passes away shortly afterwards due to his advanced age. During the funeral, Frieren is hit with a sudden wave of regret and grief as she finds herself wishing that, even though the party were together for ten years, she had spent more time with Himmel and understood him more. In the aftermath of Himmel's passing, Frieren spends more time with her comrades. The other human in her party Heiter doesn't have much longer to live so he wishes that Frieren will take his student Fern under her wing. Frieren also learns of a place called Ende, a heaven-like area located in the north, the same direction that Frieren and her party went when fighting the Demon King's forces. Ende supposedly contains the souls of the dead and the living are able to interact with them. Frieren, along with her new student Fern and Stark who's Eisen's student, embark on a new adventure to reach Ende. Along the way, Frieren steadily realizes the importance of time to humans and begins to understand the significance of her previous ten year adventure. Like many high fantasy stories, the series is set in a European inspired world. This series uses German for much of its names with the cast having one word names that reflect their personalities in some way. The series' story makes extensive use of flashbacks, alternating between the past and present to draw parallels between the two time periods. The manga was a critical and commercial success, with over 20 million copies in circulation by March 2024. Yoasobi had a successful follow up to their previous hit song Idol for Oshi no Ko, with their opening theme, Yuusha which won the Best Music award at the Tokyo Anime Award Festival.
